PAIN MANAGEMENT

Has everything you’ve tried been unable to provide you significant reduction in pain? Like the pain has control of you – rather than you over the pain?

Pain is not your only choice!

Chronic body pain, chronic back pain, myofacial pain, muscle tension related and/or migraine headaches can be managed or reduced dramatically and, in some cases, even alleviated entirely.

The CCPsychological Pain Management Program, provides comprehensive pain management services for our patients.  It is a comprehensive program because pain management is rarely a matter of only treating a specific point or points on the body.  Instead (as is becoming widely recognized), pain management also involves teaching you to change how you think, feel and behave and to have control over your own body.

At the CCPsychological Pain Management Program, we teach muscle tension awareness and control exercises such as progressive muscle relaxation training and  autogenic training ( a process that produces effects similar to hypnosis without a hypnotist performing the induction), with the assistance of biofeedback and neurofeedback therapy.  We teach the patient to become aware of blood flow in the body and to learn to control it through the recognition and control of hand temperature. There is little debate by many experts on the general effectiveness of these techniques for a variety of pain problems.  In fact,  a 1995 NIH technology assessment stated, “ Relaxation is an effective intervention for treating chronic pain”.   These exercises are learned by repeated practice- just like learning to ride a bike.

Additional techniques taught in the CCPsychological Pain Management Program for pain control include, Cognitive Restructuring, Guided Imagery and Open Focus. Open Focus is a combination of relaxation and imagery techniques along with relaxed breathing interventions. and Relaxed Breathing interventions.  Through analysis of brainwaves using neurofeedback, the Open Focus techniques are proven to help patients develop the clear, peaceful relaxed attention and amazing body control that Zen masters have practiced for centuries.
